Strong employment contracts are required in Spain as the labor law is relatively strict. The contract always states the benefits, compensation and termination requirements. To Spaniards negotiating about an indefinite contract is as important as negotiating for their salary, as indefinite contracts make it harder to lay them off and better compensation packages are required.

In Spain jobs are grouped into different categories that each have their own regulations about salary ranges and working hours. But most of the categories define a 40 hours work week and it is also what employees expect.

Employees in Spain are entitled to a minimum of 30 days off each year (23 paid business days per year) along with 10 national holidays and provincial holidays which vary in each autonomous region. The vacation time in Spain cannot be “paid out“.

Women in Spain are entitled to 16 weeks of paid maternity leave, of which 6 must be taken after the birth. One year of unpaid leave is also granted through which the mother’s job is guaranteed, she can also opt to take 2 years of unpaid leave upon which does not have to offer her previous job to her on return to work. New dads are entitled to 30 days of paternity leave, more if there are complications for the mother or the baby.

There are no standard sick days in Spain. When a worker is unable to work due to an illness or accident, they will be paid 60% of their salary for which the employer is going to be reimbursed by the Social Security department.
