According to the Lithuanian law, all employment contracts must be delivered in written form for all employees. Usually, contracts are offered for an indefinite period. Fixed-term contracts are possible for either two years or five years — the length depends on how many functions the employee will perform. Nonetheless, fixed-term contracts for permanent roles cannot exceed 20 percent of a company’s total contracts.
In Lithuania, the standard working week consists of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Some employees, like those in healthcare, childcare or some communication services, can work up to 24 consecutive hours.
Employees in Lithuania are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks vacation time annually and take at least 14 days at a time. Moreover, Lithuania celebrates 13 public holidays for which the employees are given a day off.
Lithuanian mothers receive 70 days of maternity leave before the birth and another 56 days afterward. They are entitled to the maternity leave allowance, which is paid through the State Social Insurance Fund.
Employees in Lithuania are entitled to a sick leave. For the first two days of illness, they should receive 80 to 100 percent of their usual pay, from the third through the seventh day of illness, they are entitled to 40 percent of their pay and after that, they receive sick pay of 80 percent through Lithuania’s State Social Insurance Fund.
