Generally, employment contracts in Romania are offered for either definite or indefinite duration and they have to be written in the Romanian language. The definite contracts last for 12 months and they can be extended to 18 months.
As in many other countries, the standard working week consists of 40 working hours a week, 8 hours per day. The working hours may not extend beyond 48 hours.
As required by Romanian law, the employees should get at least 20 working days off per year. They get additional days off for their weddings, a child’s wedding or a death in the family. Moreover, Romania celebrates 11 public holidays when the employees get a day off too.
New Romanian mothers get 126 days of maternity leave with compensation at 85% of their base salary. Fathers can take five days off when they get a newborn, or 15 days if they participate in childcare courses.
All employees are entitled to five sick days with compensation of 75% of their base salary. The maximum sick leave is 183 days.
