How To Become A Freelancer In 2022?

Did you know it is predicted that the majority of the workforce will freelance in at least some capacity by 2027?

Even though the majority of freelancers earn more than at their previous job with a traditional employer, it’s mostly all the flexibility that comes with it that convinced them to change their work setting.

But first – what is a freelancer anyway?

What Is A Freelancer?

Simply put, a freelancer is someone who is self-employed and not necessarily committed to only one employer. Freelancers usually work on a contract basis, rather than as permanent employees.

You can read more about the differences between a freelancer and a full-time employee here.

Is Freelancing The Right Career Path For Me?

Working as a freelancer might be the right career path for you if you have certain skills that you can easily market. Moreover, this might be the right choice if you would like to work on different projects with different clients and have the flexibility over when and where you work.

Freelancers generally also have different responsibilities than employees. They have to find new projects, set work schedules, invoice their clients and do the tax reporting and accounting.

How Can I Start Freelancing in 2022?

1. Find Your Niche

First, you’ll need to figure out what is it that you’re good at? What skills do you have that you can offer to others? Are you good at programming, graphic design, languages or creative writing? All of these skills and more can be easily translated into freelancing careers.

2. Find Your Target Audience

Narrow down your niche as much as possible and identify the type of clients you want to attract and work with.

Then start searching for your new projects! There are numerous platforms and jobs boards out there where freelancers can search for new projects or advertise their skills. For example Toptal, Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer and many more!

3. Create A Portfolio

Before applying to new projects, think about creating a portfolio showcasing your previous work. You should show your potential clients what you are capable of!

Most freelancing platforms already have a section where you can add your previous work, but if you want to go the extra mile, think about creating a different way to show your projects. You could easily create your personal website through or Squarespace. Or you could simply create a nice document style portfolio via Canva, for example!

4. Develop Your Pricing

Check out some popular freelancing platforms, study other freelancers and see what they’re charging for similar services. Start with a price that feels comfortable for you.

5. Write A Proposal

There are probably many services you could offer to your potential clients. You should create a template that can help organize your proposal for future clients. Again, a great tool that offers already made templates is Canva.
