What is the salary cost in Australia?

In Australia, employees contribute 2% of their taxable income to the Medicare levy to fund the public health system.

 

Employers, on the other hand, are legally obliged to pay a minimum of 12% of an employee's Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE) towards superannuation, which is Australia's mandatory retirement savings system. Compensation insurance, which is typically around 2% of the basic salary, also falls under the employer's costs. Plus, employers must incur the costs for annual leave loading (1.35%) and long service leave levies (typically around 3.5%, depending on the state).

How much tax do you pay in Australia?

Australia uses a progressive tax system, meaning that the higher your income, the more taxes you’ll have to pay. As of 2025, the tax rates for personal income are the following:

What are the mandatory employee benefits in Australia?

Aussie employees enjoy a range of robust benefits under the National Employment Standards (NES), including at least 20 days of paid annual leave and 10 days of paid personal/carer's (sick) leave per year.

Alongside this, eligible working parents can access up to 22 weeks of government-funded Paid Parental Leave (which is scheduled to expand to 26 weeks in July 2026). In addition, employees are entitled to 2 days of paid compassionate leave per occasion when a family or household member passes away or is seriously ill. Critically, all employees (including part-time and casual staff) now have access to 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave annually.

 

Employees have the right to disconnect from work-related tasks outside work hours and can request flexible work arrangements. Lastly, long service leave is available after a long tenure with the same employer, though the specific accrual rates vary by state and territory.
