How does the salary calculator for Sweden work?
The salary calculator for Sweden estimates gross and net earnings by factoring in various components. It begins with the gross salary, including base pay, bonuses, and additional compensation. Next, it applies Sweden’s municipal rate or the national tax rate for higher income brackets.
The calculator also accounts for social security contributions from both the employee and the employer, which fund essential services such as pensions and healthcare. After all taxes and contributions are deducted, the result is the net salary, the actual amount the employee takes home.
What is the salary cost in Sweden?
Employers contribute around 31.42% of the employee’s gross salary to cover social security. These contributions fund important services like healthcare, pensions, parental leave, and unemployment benefits. This percentage applies uniformly, regardless of the employee’s salary level.
Many employers also provide an additional pension contribution, often around 4.5-6% of the employee's gross salary. This is a benefit that goes beyond the basic national pension and can make a company more attractive to potential employees.
How much tax do you pay in Sweden?
Sweden’s income tax is progressive, with a combination of municipal and national taxes. Employees pay a municipal tax of around 29% to 35%, depending on the municipality they reside in.
There is also an additional 20% national income tax (statlig inkomstskatt), but this only applies to the portion of taxable income exceeding SEK 643,000 per year.

What are the mandatory employee benefits in Sweden?
By law, employees in Sweden are entitled to 25 paid vacation days per year. During vacation, employees receive an increased vacation pay amounting to 12% of their regular income, typically distributed in advance of or during their leave.
When it comes to parental leave, Sweden is world-renowned, offering 480 days of paid leave per child. This leave is highly flexible:
- Each parent is allocated 240 days.
- 90 days are strictly reserved for each parent and are non-transferable.
- During the first 390 days, parents receive approximately 80% of their salary (up to a designated cap), and a flat rate for the remaining 90 days.
Recent update: Parents can now transfer up to 45 of their leave days (90 days for single parents) to another individual, such as the child's grandparents.
Employees are also exceptionally well-supported during illness. Sweden uses a "qualifying deduction" (karensavdrag) rather than an unpaid first day of sickness. This deduction equals 20% of an average week's sick pay, ensuring a fairer calculation for people with irregular schedules.
After this deduction, employees receive 80% of their salary from the employer for days 2 through 14. If the illness extends beyond 14 days, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) steps in to provide sickness benefits, generally at 80% of the employee’s salary up to a certain cap.
