The Inside Track

There are two different types of employment contracts in Montenegro; indefinite or fixed-term contracts. Fixed-term contracts, whether a single contract or multiple contracts, may not be longer than 36 months.

The working hours in Montenegro are 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Nevertheless, the workweek is often shorter under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.

Montenegrin employees are entitled to 21 days of paid annual leave. Moreover, employees are eligible for up to 7 days of annual leave for matrimony, birth, professional examinations and for the death of an immediate family member.

A woman who is expecting a child receives 98 days of maternity leave; 28 days before the expected date and 70 days after. Both parents are entitled to 70 days of paid leave after the birth in case multiple children are born.

There is no official set number of the number of sick days an employee is entitled to. Employees must produce a medical certificate no later than the third day of illness, and if there is a separate report documenting a temporary inability to work, the employee must provide the report to the employer within five days of its issuance.
